      The Creation banner ties together two texts from Scripture: Genesis 1-2:3 and John 1, and the concept of light. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… And God said, Let there be light, and there was light… And God saw that the light was good. (Genesis 1).” “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God   In Him was life, and the life was the light of all people (John 1).”

      The banner is divided into eight segments, seven for the days of the creation, and one for the day of new creation, the day of salvation in which we live. In the lower left, the separation of light and darkness is depicted on Day One. Proceeding clockwise, Day Two symbolizes the separation of the waters; Day Three, the establishment of dry land and plant life; Day Four, the creation of sun, moon, and stars; Day Five, the creation of fish and birds; Day Six, the creation of animals and man, with male and female being given dominion over all of creation; Day Seven, God’s resting from his labors, with open hands extending in blessing. Day Eight shows the hands of Jesus, God’s Son, marked with the wounds of the nails. From a chalice, droplets of blood splash beneath those hands. A cross and Host, marked with IHS (monogram for Jesus) are central to the eighth Day.

      Pure light, when broken up by a prism, reveals the spectrum of the rainbow. Hence the banner was constructed using the rainbow color progression to emphasize this quality of light. The center of the banner depicts the Spirit of God (dove) who moved over the face of the waters when the world was created, and Jesus Christ the pure Light of the world. article and design by Lois Prahlow.

Prutah or Widows's Mites

The Lesson of the widow's mite is presented in the Synoptic Gospels (Mark 12:41-44, Luke 21:1-4), in which Jesus is teaching at the Temple in Jerusalem. The Gospel of Mark specifies that two mites (Greek lepta) are together worth a quadrans, the smallest Roman coin. A lepton was the smallest and least valuable coin in circulation in Judea, worth about six minutes of an average daily wage.

Prutah (Hebrew: פרוטה) is a word borrowed from the Mishnah and the Talmud, in which it means "a coin of smaller value". The word was probably derived originally from an Aramaic word with the same meaning.
       The prutah was an ancient copper Jewish coin worth about one thousandth of a pound. A loaf of bread at that time was worth about 10 prutot (plural of prutah). One prutah was also worth two lepta (singular lepton), which was the smallest denomination minted by the Hasmonean and Herodian Dynasty kings.
       Prutot were also minted by the Roman Procurators of the Province of Judea, and later were minted by the Jews during the First Jewish Revolt (sometimes called 'Masada coins').

The Carnival season, a variation of the traditional manner of preparing for the start of the Christian liturgical season of Lent, starts after Twelfth Night, on Epiphany (January 6). It is a season of parades, balls (some of them masquerade balls), and king cake parties. It has traditionally been part of the winter social season; which at one time was when parties for Southern Society women, débutante balls, were arranged.

The Mardi Gras Flag

The traditional colors of the New Orleans Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold. All three colors were used by the Catholic Church throughout history and thus continued to be used in relation to Mardi Gras which was Catholic in origin.

The formal end of New Orleans Mardi Gras arrives with the "Meeting of the Courts," a ceremony at which Rex and His Royal Consort, the King and Queen of Carnival, meet with Comus and his Queen, at the ball of the Mistick Krewe of Comus, New Orleans' oldest active Carnival organization. The Meeting of the Courts happens at the conclusion of the two groups' masked balls, which in modern times have both been held at the New Orleans Municipal Auditorium. Following Hurricane Katrina, the ball has been held in the Marriott Hotel.

God's Colorful Congregation

       My father loved to draw and he created a series of drawings for my web collection here before he died. He was a man who knew many sorrows in this life. He left his small congregation in Mississippi because they asked him to leave. He had radical ideas about people of all races worshiping together. This all happened before I was born. I grew up knowing my dad as a history professor, not a leader of a congregation. Even though he was ostracized by his flock, he forgave freely and raised my brothers and myself without resentment against the church or her members. He wanted to see this little publishing ministry reach far and wide across the country and across the sea. I hope that it grows bigger than either of our personal expectations.

"Better Is One Day"

In modern Italian he is called il Beato Angelico (Blessed Angelic One); the common English name Fra Angelico means the "Angelic friar".
       In 1982 Pope John Paul II proclaimed his beatification, in recognition of the holiness of his life, thereby making the title of "Blessed" official. Fiesole is sometimes misinterpreted as being part of his formal name, but it was merely the name of the town where he took his vows as a Dominican friar, and was used by contemporaries to separate him from other Fra Giovannis. He is listed in the Roman Martyrology as Beatus Ioannes Faesulanus, cognomento Angelicus—"Blessed Giovanni of Fiesole, known as 'the Angelic' ".
       Vasari wrote of Fra Angelico that "it is impossible to bestow too much praise on this holy father, who was so humble and modest in all that he did and said and whose pictures were painted with such facility and piety."
