Little block prints about the life of Samsom

"Delilah lulled Samson to sleep with his head in her lap, and then she called in a man to shave off the seven locks of his hair. In this way she began to bring him down, and his strength left him." Judges 16:19
Illustration Described: black and white illustrations, Samson, Old Testament stories, Jewish priest, Levite, Biblical characters dressed in Renaissance costume, which was the custom of artists at that time. These block prints are from a 16th century German Bible I believe. I have redrawn and restored them. Scriptures are from the New Living Translation, Book of Judges

"As Samson and his parents were going down to Timnah, a young lion suddenly attacked Samson near the vineyards of Timnah." Judges 14:5
"he prayed, "Let me die with the Philistines." And the temple crashed down on the Philistine rulers and all the people. So he killed more people when he died than he had during his entire lifetime." Judges 16:30
"But Samson stayed in bed only until midnight. Then he got up, took hold of the doors of the town gate, including the two posts, and lifted them up, bar and all. He put them on his shoulders and carried them all the way to the top of the hill across from Hebron." Judges 16:3

The Daughter of Jephthah

Some writers have observed that the Israelites of the time were decidedly barbarous; that Mosaic law (which forbade human sacrifice) was at this time widely disrespected; and that there are several other examples of rash vows to God with similarly terrible consequences.
Description of Illustration: a colorful, restored illustration of Jephthah's only child

Jephthah (pronounced /ˈɛfθə/; Hebrew: יפתח‎‎ Yip̄tāḥ), appears in the Book of Judges as a judge over Israel for a period of six years (Judges 12:7). He lived in Gilead and was a member either of the tribe of Manasseh or of the tribe of Gad. His father's name is also given as Gilead and, as his mother is described as a prostitute, this may mean that his father may have been any of the men of that area. Jephthah led the Israelites in battle against Ammon and, after defeating the Ammonites, fulfilled a rash vow of his, by sacrificing his daughter. Traditionally, Jephthah is listed among major judges on the ground of the length of the biblical narrative referring to him, but his story also shows signs of minor judges, for instance only six years duration of his office as judge.
