Description of the illustration: John Knox (c. 1513 – 24 November 1572) was a Scottish minister, theologian, and writer who was a leader of the Reformation and is considered the founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. He is believed to have been educated at the University of St Andrews and worked as a notary-priest. Influenced by early church reformers such as George Wishart, he joined the movement to reform the Scottish church. He was caught up in the ecclesiastical and political events that involved the murder of Cardinal Beaton in 1546 and the intervention of the regent of Scotland Mary of Guise. He was taken prisoner by French forces the following year and exiled to England on his release in 1549. Read more...

 ¹⁹“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. ²⁰At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores ²¹and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. ²²“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. Illustration Described: black and white illustrations, Samson, Old Testament stories, Jewish priest, Levite, Biblical characters dressed in Renaissance costume, which was the custom of artists at that time. These block prints are from a 16th century German Bible I believe. I have redrawn and restored them. Scriptures are from the New Living Translation, Book of Judges
