Life
A lady occupied a whole year in searching for and fitting the following lines from English and American poets. The whole reads almost as if written at one time and by one author:
"Why all this toil for triumphs of an hour? -- Young
"Life's a short summer -- man is but a flower; " -- Dr. Johnson
"By turns we catch the fatal breath and die" --Pope
"The cradle and the tomb, alas! so nigh! -- Prior
"To be is better far than not to be," -- Sewell
"Tho all man's life may seem a tragedy;" --Spencer
"But light cards speak when mighty griefs are dumb" --Daniel
"The bottom is but shallow whence they come." -- Raleigh
"Your fate is but the common fate of all," -- Longfellow
"Unmingled joys here to no man befall; --Southwell
"Nature to each allots his proper sphere." -- Congreve
"Fortune makes folly her peculiar care." -- Churchill
"Custom does often reason overrule" --Rochester
"And throw a cruel sunshine on a fool;" -- Armstrong
"Live well -- how long or short permit to heaven," -- Milton
"They who forgive most shall be most forgiven." -- Bailey
"Sin may be clasped so close we can not see its face;" -- French
"Vile intercourse where virtue has no place." -- Somerville
"Then keep each passion down, however dear," -- Thompson
"Thou pendulum betwixt a smile and tear:" -- Byron
"Her sensual snares let faithless pleasures lay," -- Smollett
"With craft and skill to ruin and betray" -- Crabbe
"Soar not too high to fall, but stoop to rise;" -- Massinger
"We maters grow of all that we despise." --Crowley
"Oh, then, renounce that impious self-esteem." -- Beattie
"Riches have wings, and grandeur is a dream." -- Cowper
"Think not ambition wise because 'tis brave" -- Davenant
"The paths of glory lead but to the grave." -- Gray

Genius And Work
Edison, when asked his definition of genius, answered: "Two per cent is genius, and ninety-eight per cent is hard work."
When asked on another occasion: "Mr. Edison, don't you believe that genius is inspiration?" he replied: "No! Genius is perspiration."

Fear of God
Of all the memorials found in Westminster Abbey, there is not one that gives a nobler thought than the life lesson from the monument to Lord Lawrence. Simply his name and date of his death, and these words:
"He feared man so little because he feared God so much."
Here is one great secret of victory. The prayer of the Rugby boy, John Laing Bickersteth, found locked up in his desk after his death, was:
"Oh God, give me courage that I may fear none but thee."

Quotes/Poems by Robert Louis Stevenson
Give us courage and gaiety and the quiet mind. Spare us to our friends, soften us to our enemies Bless us, if it may be, in all our innocent endeavors |
And if we find but one to whom we can speak out our heart freely, with whom we can walk in love and simplicity without dissmulation, we have no ground of quarrel with the world or God. |
Of what shall a man be proud If he is not proud of his friends? |
